Butler Report
Overview
Sword is a risk management solution that records risks, controls, and responsibilities throughout an organisation. It provides users with repositories of information about activities and processes within the organisation, the risks associated with them, and the steps that can be taken to mitigate these risks. Many risks are associated with compliance, and organisations often do not understand which regulations they need to comply with or what their duties are in order to comply. Organisations often use spreadsheets to maintain a list of risks and how they should be addressed, which are error prone and difficult to manage.
One of the strengths of Sword is that it can be supplied pre-populated with a range of content, such as risk and control libraries, categories, metrics, and thresholds, targeted at specific vertical industries, functions, and regulations. However, the product only works on Windows platforms, and this could be an issue for some organisations. The main target market for the product is currently large financial services companies.
Why choose Sword
With regulations and legislation on the increase, many organisations are feeling the impact as they struggle to understand their obligations to what can seem to be conflicting requirements. This is of benefit to operation risk management vendors, which provide organisations with the tools required to manage their risks. There are two elements to risk management solutions. There are the frameworks themselves, which focus on the technical and procedural controls that the IT organisation can undertake in support of enterprise-level regulatory requirements, and there are vendors that provide risk content for specific vertical markets that include regulations. Because it is heavily regulated, financial services is popular among risk management vendors.
Sword, part of ARC Logics, a Wolters Kluwer business has an advantage over some of these vendors in that it provides both the risk management framework and pre-populated templates for specific industries, functions, and regulations, giving organisations the tools they require to reduce their exposure to risks. A document of this size cannot do full justice to Sword, and the product merits a closer examination.
