Three Lines of Defense
The traditional three lines of defense are:
the business, i.e. the day to day running of the operation;
the continual monitoring of the business by risk and compliance specialists;
the periodic checking of risk and compliance by audit.
As businesses increase in size and the regulatory and risk environments become more complex these three lines can become disjointed. It can become difficult to identify what needs defending and what threats are arising. The three lines of defense then become ineffective and inefficient.
